The Shire, illustration by J.R.R. I am absolutely blown away by the number of people who have read my piece about J.R.R. Tolkien’s lost Rotterdam Hobbit. 25 reviews of The Thirsty Hippo 'Loved the atmosphere. Had the red bean hummus, brie sandwich and a hotdog. Food was delicious and our waitress was wonderful. Tarzan at the Earth's Core, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, free ebook. The Thirsty Hippo - 5. Photos & 2. 6 Reviews - Music Venues - 3. Mc. Leod St, Hattiesburg, MS - Restaurant Reviews - Phone Number. My parents came to visit from out of state, and we tried to go here for lunch, not realizing that they close in the afternoon. The grilled brie sandwich with pepper jelly spread is amazing. The bean salad is also incredible and perfectly filling. It's always a bit slow ordering up at the bar but then they make your food very quickly. In regards to the building, it is very spacious for organized events. There is also a stage for a band as well as a large outdoor patio. This is truly a little gem in Hattiesburg. Not a bad local spot. Can be very 'hipster- ish' on the weekends but a good spot to catch live music. In a rare treat most beers are canned but they do rotate the selection of the more brewery ones .. Haven't tried the food yet but everyone seems to like it. Loved the atmosphere. Food was delicious and our waitress was wonderful. If you don't have blue hair or gray skin, you will be promptly dismissed or treated with disdain.. But then, who wants friendly service, anyway.? One if the best places in Hattiesburg for local people, and live music! And they pour the beer to the top!!! No foam! The drink was pretty good. It took 2. 0 minutes to get an appetizer that didn't have to be cooked. I might would go back on a night with a live band. I would recommend the Keg and Barrel . I enjoy the food and the beer list and I especially enjoy the happy hour prices. Great place to go for a dinner and drinks with friends or for a show. Loved it. I got the whiskey pimento cheese burger with a veggie burger. It had good texture, not too mushy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The little bits of carrot were nice. I liked that the burger was not huge so I was full but not stuffed and no leftovers. The bun is nice soft and airy.
There was also just the right amount of pimento cheese. The bourbon combined with the cheese was an odd flavor, not bad just unusual. I also wonder if there was some blue cheese in the mix. I would totally get this again. One of my companions got the red bean hummus as an appetizer and we all tried it. I thought it was subtle. But some thought it was too bland. May be a little more garlic would've been better but it was still pretty good. I come to Hattiesburg once a year for a conference. Next year I will check it out at night, it seems like a cool place. And the staff were very nice. Friends and I went here for the first time during lunch today - we were very impressed! I had the Whiskey Pimento Cheeseburger with a side salad. The quality of the meat and bread was amazing. Side salad was the perfect size. Both friends got the Grilled Brie sandwich, which they loved. Service was quick and polite.. For dessert we ordered the bread pudding.. It's . A HUGE portion that was easy to share between the three of us. The only, ONLY, reason I did not make this review 5 stars is that my bread was cold (would have been outstanding warm!) And.. They have no tomatoes for the burgers (petty, I know.. I love tomatoes). Overall, We will definitely be back and you should stop in for a bite! This place is a local gem. The ham and brie sandwich is fantastic and the red bean hummus is an interesting twist. Good selection of beer. Nice outside seating area. We were surprised to find homemade red bean hummus and one of the best veggie burgers here. We brought children and went around 6ish. They have a kids menu, but ours chose to order off of the regular menu. The service was wonderful! The waitress and the manager checked on us quite a few times. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The band was setting up for later in the evening and music was playing. Try the banh mi veggie burger (I don't order anything else except the veggie banh mi dog, at least before it was discontinued). Banh mi is a traditional Vietnamese . Their veggie patty will just change your life. And they serve a different kind of bread pudding every evening. It's one of their best menu items. The beer selection and live music some nights are quite excellent as well. Overall, great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, great service (staff is super friendly). One of the best restaurants/bars in Hattiesburg, hands down. I love this place so much. A long sliver of a door beside darkened buildings is how I first found this spot. Walk down a long corridor and it opens into a decent sized room where performers entertain on a ground level. A bar which only stocks beer but that in keeps with the laid back mellow vibe of the space. You can sit in the booths or sit outside which is my favourite thing to do amongst the fairy lights and sculptures from the studio next door. Whenever I think of summer I think of here and sitting in the humid air with a cool beer and live music wafting through. I remember chatting to the owner and commending him on getting great acts from around the country to perform here, he was so focused on his mission to provide an accessible space and music to the people. I count down the days till I return again to this spot. This place is the friggin best. Great food (delicious salads - I recommend them with the fried egg, delicious veggie burgers, red bean hummus.. Great beer selection, including local brews from MS. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are chill. Good for seeing music, reading, chatting with friends, a date, whatever. Also, Monday, Red Bean Running Club! Run a 5k through downtown, pay $5 and get a bowl of rice and beans and a beer or wine after. All bow to The Thirsty Hippo!
